Jane Dixon died peacefully at home in Birmingham, AL on December 24 at the age of 88.
Jane is survived by her husband of 70 years, Don Dixon, her daughter Donna Cook (Ted), her grandchildren Will Dixon (Jodi) of Pine Apple, AL, Braden Weeks (Morgan) of Austin, TX, Russell Cook (Ande) of Huntsville, AL, Robert Cook of Cleveland, AL and her great-grandchildren, Robert Brewer Dixon II and Elizabeth Barnes Dixon of Pine Apple, AL. In addition, she leaves a niece, many cousins, and a host of forever friends.
She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Brewer Dixon, her parents, Louise and Simon Smith and her in-laws, Frances and Eddie Dixon, as well as her brother, Joe Deming Smith.
Jane was born and raised in Grand Junction, TN. She met Don, the love of her life, in high school and they married after she graduated in 1954. They lived in Memphis where she graduated from business school and then worked at Metropolitan Life before becoming a full time mother. The family moved from Memphis to Muscle Shoals, AL, then New Orleans, LA before settling in Birmingham in 1968. She was a Baptist until she joined the Methodist church where Don was a member in 1954. Jane, a woman of great faith, has always been an active member in Sunday school, church and the United Methodist Women. She has been a loyal member of Center Point United Methodist Church and the Mizpah Sunday School class since 1968. She taught kindergarten at the church for 15 years and has served in various capacities at the church. She always had a heart full of love for all children.
Jane was a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels until she fell while making a delivery and then became unable to continue. She was a founding and active member of the breast cancer support group, Bosom Buddies, at St. Vincent’s East, and a faithful servant visiting those in nursing homes until she was physically unable to do so.
If you knew Jane, you will remember her for her smile, love, compassion, patience, kindness, thoughtfulness, and her faithfulness. She truly displayed and lived out the fruits of the spirit. She will always be fondly remembered and greatly missed by those blessed to know and love her – especially those who called her Mother, Momma, “Mudder”, or “Muddie”. She so loved her husband and all of her children and grandchildren.
