James Troy Smith

May 18, 1906 — June 21, 2008

James Troy Smith was born on May 18, 1906, the youngest of six sons of John Henry and Katie Smith of Sulphur Springs, TN. He died in Temple, TX on June 21, 2008 at the age of 102 years.



He graduated from Selmer High School in 1925. He married Martha Frances Abernathy, daughter of John Abernathy and Leona Castleberry Abernathy of Acton, TN on June 14, 1930. He started working at the Selmer Bank and Trust in 1926. His first job was counting pennies. He was Chairman of the Board when he retired after having a stroke in January 1986.



He was an active and loyal member of the First United Methodist Church of Selmer, TN for many years. He served as Chairman of the Board of Stewards, Chariman of the Finance Committee and Superintendent of the Sunday School as well as numerous committees of the church. He served as a delegate to the Memphis Conference of the Methodist Church.



He was Chairman of the McNairy County General Hospital Board, and served on the board of Selmer Utility District, the Boy Scout Council, the March of Dimes and the Pickwick Electric Board. He was a member of the Lions Club. He was Master Mason and a member of the Al Chymia Temple Shrine Club.



He was faithful husband to his wife Frances and cared for her during her long illness. He was father of Martha Jane Smith Brasher of Temple, TX wife of Dr. George Walter Brasher and Nancy Frances Smith Darrow of San Antonio, TX. He had five grandchildren: Suzanne Smith Brasher Cheshier of Norman, OK wife of Alan Cheshier, George Walter Brasher,IV of Washougal, WA husband of Cathy Brasher, John Bradley Brasher of Temple, TX husband of Jennifer Brasher, Rev. David James Brasher of Nacogdoches, TX, husband of Kimberly Brasher, and Paul A. Darrow III of Dickinson, TX husband of Amber Darrow. He had eight great grandchildren: Darian Rae Cheshier, Troy Alan Cheshier and Camryn Suzanne Cheshier all of Norman, OK, Benjamin George Brasher and Bradley Cole Brasher both of Washougal, WA, Reagan Elizabeth Brasher and Rebekah Grace Brasher of Nacogdoches, TX and Trevor Bryce Stump of Temple, TX.



Troy loved his wife, his two daughters, his church, smoking cigars and playing pitch. He served as master of ceremonies for many occasions. His grandchildren were the pride of his life. Even though he was in a wheel chair for 22 years he never lost his love of people and greeted them at the door of the Meridian Nursing Home. He kept his sense of humor and his friendly smile.



Pallbearers will be George Brasher IV, John Brasher, Paul Darrow III, Alan Cheshier, Troy Cheshier and Bill Abernathy.
