Mr. Henley, 81, of Lauderdale, died Saturday, March 15, 2025, at The University of Alabama Birmingham Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mr. Henley was born November 21, 1943, and raised in hardscrabble McNairy County, Tennessee. He struggled in early life, as did most folks in that area, but eventually secured a job with the railroad. Jimmy was a smart fellow, and became an accomplished electrician, maintaining railroad signals at crossings. For many years, he would put in a full day’s work, just to be called to travel to remote and distant malfunctions of railroad signals. Often these calls came mere minutes after going to bed. Jimmy’s selfless work ethic has no doubt saved many lives.
Jimmy’s devotion to his career was only surpassed by his love of family and The Lord. He was an active member of First Baptist Church Lauderdale, and his presence will be missed by the congregation.
Jimmy loved to hunt and fish, but his passion seemed to be raising the best garden in Lauderdale County. He shared his bounty with friends and neighbors as if they were his family.
Jimmy was a very generous person, helping countless people, young and old, with not only financial assistance if needed, but also with his time, labor, and expertise. Many are in his debt.
Jimmy, “St. James” to some, will be greatly missed by those fortunate enough to have known him. Heaven is now a better place with him there.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruby Hazel Henley; children, Greg Henley and Scott Henley and his wife Scarlett; bonus children, Rick McCraw (Connie) and Terrie Farmer; grandchildren, Tyler Henley (Holly), Payton Watkins (Davis), Cameron Henley, Scotlynn Farmer Lyon (Garrett), Keaton Farmer Farley; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Danny Henley (Judy); two sisters, Peggy Mitchell (Fred) and Cheryl Ervin (Ronald), as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Mr. Henley is preceded in death by his parents, Lee O. and Mary Inetha Rankin Henley.
The Henley Family suggests memorials be made as donations to First Baptist Church Lauderdale, MS in lieu of flowers.
