JAMES A. HOPPER
was born in Shelby County, Tennessee on January 2, 1938 the son of the late Freeman Arguyle and Evelyn Cammack Hopper.
Mr. Hopper received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Memphis State University on May 28, 1960 and Juris Doctor (magna cum laude) from Memphis State University School of Law on January 13, 1965, where he was a member of The Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity. Mr. Hopper received his law license issued by the State of Tennessee on August 14, 1965. Mr. Hopper was licensed to practice in the Tennessee Supreme Court on November 3, 1965, to practice in the United States District Court-Western District on February 4, 1966, to practice in the United States Supreme Court on November 18, 1970, to practice in the 6th Circuit, United States Court of Appeals on December 18, 1990, to practice in the United States District Court-Middle District on May 24, 1991 and starting in 1969 he served as Savannah City Attorney. Mr. Hopper was a founding member and law partner of Hopper & Plunk, PLLC until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of Paul Harris Fellow-Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, Hardin County Bar Association where he was President until his retirement in 2005, Tennessee Bar Association where he was a member of the House of Delegates, 1974, 1980 to 1983, Board of Governors from 1983 to 1986, Association of Insurance Attorneys, Tennessee Defense Lawyers Association, Tennessee Municipal Attorneys Association where he was President from 1984 to 1985 and Fellow, Tennessee Bar Foundation where he was a member of the Supreme Court Committee for Disciplinary District 7 from 1990 to 2005.
Jim will be remembered for his devotion to the legal profession, his adherence to the highest standards of professional ethics, his exemplary personal conduct and his distinguished service rendered in the administration of justice.
On January 28, 1961 he was united in marriage to the former Sharron Beard, who survives.
Mr. Hopper departed this life on June 18, 2007 at the Hardin Medical Center in Savannah, Tennessee at the age of 69 years, 5 months and 16 days.
Other than his wife, Sharron of Savannah, Tennessee, he is survived by 3 sons, Russell Warren Hopper and his wife Andrea of Florence, Alabama, Curtis Freeman Hopper and his wife Jeanie of Savannah, Tennessee and James Arguyle Hopper, Jr. and his wife Rachel of Knoxville, Tennessee.
6 grandchildren, Matthew, Alex, Ben, Anna, Stephanie and Madelyn Hopper.
Mr. Hopper was also preceded in death by one sister, Marilyn Rollins.
