James Hunter Higgs, 76, of Toone, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at Bolivar General Hospital.
The husband of Velma Haliburton Higgs, who survives, he was a systems analyst, computer programmer and licensed certified data processor for Harman Automotive until he retired in 1993. Mr. Higgs was born March 30, 1929 in Bolivar, son of the late James Hunter Higgs, Sr. and Lena Mae Yarbrough Higgs. He was raised in Memphis, spent his summers at a farm in Toone and returned here after graduating high school. Mr. Higgs served in the U. S. Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He was a past member of the Toone Ruritan and a former deacon at Toone Baptist Church, where he currently taught men’s Sunday School class. Mr. Higgs was an avid gardener.
Services were 3:00 PM, Thursday, March 16, 2006 at Shackelford Funeral Directors Bolivar chapel with John Farrar, Tommy Smith and Todd Higgs officiating. Burial was in Vernon Cemetery near Cloverport.
In addition to his wife, whom he married December 21, 1950, survivors include two sons, Tom Higgs of Friendship and Bob Higgs of Toone; one sister, Jean Stone of Texas and seven grandchildren, Todd, Kimberly and Heather Higgs, Stella Bess Barron, Agatha Kate Boone, and Mary Katherine and Laura Ann Higgs. He was preceded in death by one son, Mike and grandchild, Allison.
