JAMES ‘POPS’ GRANT
Henderson, TN: James Thomas Grant, III passed away September 5, 2016 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
He was born December 23, 1922 in Cairo, IL and raised in East St. Louis, the son of the late James Thomas Grant, II and Adele Anna Tucker Grant. He attended schools in East St. Louis and served in the U.S. Army as Sergeant, volunteering the day after Pearl Harbor. He married Montez Rozzell in 1945. They made their home in Fulton, KY where they both worked for H.I.S. They moved to East St. Louis where he worked in the grocery business and worked for Wetterau Grocery Business (I.G.A.) in supervisory positions in Southwest, MO. He owned and operated several groceries business and moved to Tennessee in 1988 and was co-owner and manager of Sonic Drive-In in Henderson until he turned 80. All his employees at Sonic called him ‘Pops’. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Henderson.
Mr. Grant is survived by his wife, Montez Rozzell Grant of Henderson; a son Joe Grant and wife Sherry of Covington; two daughters, Kathy Nichols and husband Nick of Cedar Grove and Marilyn Dieckmeyer and husband Billy of Henderson; nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Rose Morris of O’Fallon, IL, Shirley Strong of Carlisle, IL and Sue Kerwin of Carlisle, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, James Thomas Grant, IV, in 2015 and a sister, Mary Thelma Rozzell.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Stan Smith officiating. Burial will follow with Military Honors at 3:00 PM Thursday at Salem Cemetery in Fulgham, KY.
The family will receive friends at Casey Chapel beginning at 9:00 AM Thursday until service time at 11:00 AM Thursday.
