James Russ Davidson, 94, Waynesboro, TN was born Monday, June 15, 1914 on Hardin's Creek, Waynesboro, to the Alfred F. and Mattie Cole Davidson, who preceded him in death.
He died Monday, November 24, 2008 at Wayne County Nursing Home in Waynesboro, TN
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mae Tom Whitby Davidson; a grandson, Thomas Russ Davidson; a son-in-law, Martin L. Haggard, Sr.; brothers, Malcolm, Frank, Freeman, and Jay Price Davidson; and sisters, Lucille and Helen Davidson and Elliotte Brown.
He is survived by son, Gene D. Davidson of Clifton, TN; daughters, Sibyl Haggard of Waynesboro, TN and Barbara Carman and husband, William S. (Bud) Carman; grandchildren, Martin L. Haggard, Jr. and wife, Tina, James Haggard and wife, Annette, Amy Davidson Sawyer, Jana Davidson Haughey and husband, Mike, Doug Davidson and wife, Regina, and Bill Carman and wife, Tammie; great-grandchildren, Amber Haggard Miller and husband, Barry, Garrett Haggard and wife, Ashlee, Holly Haggard Floyd and husband, Brandon, RoiAnn Haggard Bryant and husband, Jacob, Kyle Haggard, Daniel and Carrie, and Jonathan Sawyer, Matthew and Sarah Haughey, Ian Davidson, and Sofia Carman; great-great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Makohl Haggard.
Mr. Davidson was a 1933 graduate of Frank Hughes School. After high school, he went to work in the county agent's office for the W. P. A. program and met his furture wife, Mae Tom Whitby on that job. On August 18, 1935, he and Mae Tom rode his Harley Davidson to Corinth, MS to get married. That union lasted 63 years until her death on November 1, 1998.
Russ did construction work for several years and then came home to farm. He was manager of the Wayne Farner's Coop from 1956 to 1966 and was elected Wayne County Judge in 1966 and served in that capacity until 1974. During his tenure, the Wayne County Nursing Home was built and Wayne County Ambulance service was established. In 1974, he was appointed Election Registrar for Wayne County and served in that office until 1978.
After retirement, he and Mae Tom operated a landscaping nursery at their home. Until going to the Wayne County Nursing Home to reside in January, 2007, he spent many, many hours at his computer working on family history and genealogy.
Mr. Davidson was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon for many years. He also served as Sunday School Superintendant and church historian. He was a Shriner and a member of Clifton Masonic Lodge #173. Until his health prevented it, he was very active in the Wayne County Democratic Party.
He was a great father, grandfather, and friend to many people.
His family wants to give special thanks to the wonderful caregivers at Wayne County Nursing Home, to Dr. Joe Hall and his staff, and to the staff at Wayne Medical Center.
