JAMES D. BURNS

Henderson, TN: James Dee Burns, age 82, passed away Sunday July 31, 2016 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.

He was born December 23, 1933 in Coble, TN in Hickman County, the son of the late Aubrey Dee and Martha Margaret Coble Burns. He graduated from Eastside High School in Detroit in 1951. In 1954, he graduated from Freed-Hardeman College with a major in Bible and married Ramona Stackpole.

He began preaching in Belmont, MS and moved to Nashville and preached in the Nashville area while he attended David Lipscomb College.

He preached for the Churches of Christ at Shiloh in Florence, AL, Southside in Grenada, MS, Centralia and Geneseo churches in IL, Vaughn Hill in Wood River, IL, Coleman Avenue in Memphis, Dyer’s Chapel near Lexington and many others.

He received a bachelor’s degree in math from David Lipscomb College in 1958. He received Masters degrees from Harding Graduate School of Religion in Memphis, and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

They moved to Henderson in 2002 and he preached in area congregations and taught bible classes at the Henderson Church of Christ. He had authored many religious tracts.
Mr. Burns was a member of the Henderson Church of Christ.

He was a former Boy Scout leader and CPR and First Aide instructor. He had served as teacher and director of Rockford Christian Camp in IL and Little Egypt Christian Camp in IL. He also had served as a director of the Churches of Christ Exhibit at the Illinois State Fair. He had worked with the City of Memphis and Shelby County Department of Juvenile Probation.

Mr. Burns is survived by his wife, Ramona Stackpole Burns of Henderson; two sons, Tim Burns and wife Laurie of Roscoe, IL and Dexel Burns and wife Angie of Luray and two daughters, Tammy Byrd and husband Stephen of Colona, IL and Sarah (Beth) Burns of Henderson, a brother Wallace Norman Burns of Naples, Italy; five grandchildren; Tiffanie Armstrong and husband Jake, Laura Douglas and husband Jeremy, Aubrey Goveia, Melissa Byrd, and Kacy Burns and ten great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson Anthony Neal Burns and one great grandson.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Roy Sharp, Milton Sewell, Wayne Scott, Alan Highers and David Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Chester County Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Casey Chapel 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to the Freed – Hardeman University Old Main Restoration Project, The FHU Associates, or the Henderson Church of Christ building fund.
