J.L. Barbee
was born in Nicholas County, Kentucky on August 11, 1920 the son of the late Lafe and Julia Thomas Burden Barbee.
On September 9, 1938, in Moorehead, Kentucky, he was united in marriage to the former Gladys M. Harper, who survives.
Mr. Barbee worked as a Journeyman Roofer and was a member of the local union #23 in South Bend, Indiana. He lived in Elkhart, Indiana for 40 years before moving to Savannah, Tennessee in 1996.
He departed this life on March 11, 2006 at his residence in Savannah, Tennessee at the age of 85 years and 7 months.
Mr. Barbee is survived by his wife, Gladys Barbee of Savannah, Tennessee;
2 sons: Donald & Shirley Barbee of Elkhart, Indiana
Darrell & Mary Barbee of Minnesota;
5 daughters: Shirley Myers of Savannah, Tennessee
Judy & Lonnie Tidwell of Savannah, Tennessee
Sandra Atkinson of Elkhart, Indiana
Candy & Kim Butt of Tucson, Arizona
Penny & Mickey Matlock of Elkhart, Indiana;
19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, J.C. Barbee, 3 grandchildren: Phillip Woods, Donnie McCall and Samitha Ogle; one great-grandchild, Samual Copeland; 5 brothers: John, Justus, Oney, Herman and Erman Barbee and one sister, Gladys Tubbs.
