He was born and reared in Chester County in the Chickasaw area the son of the late Alvis Franklin and Virginia Catherine Melton Jones. He attended school in Chester County and graduated Chester County High School in 1934.
In early 1941, he entered Anderson Airplane School in Nashville, TN and became an employee at MacDill Field Air Force Base in Tampa, FL. He was inducted into the Air Force in March 1943. He left the States to become part of a replacement unit to the 14th Air Force in Italy. He was later flown to Casablanca in Africa where he was stationed for the duration of his time in service. He received his discharge April 10, 1946 and returned to full-time farming in Henderson.
He was married to Kathryn O’Neill Stovall on Dec. 24, 1946. He was an active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and attended church there since it was built in 1949. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and had served as director, vice president and president.
In addition to farming, he was associated with Gooch-Edenton Hardware Company in Jackson, where he was warehouse supervisor.
He is survived by a daughter, Frances Jones Eubanks and husband Gordon of Jackson; two grandchildren, Kathryn Elizabeth Kirk (Aaron) of Jackson and Philip Wilbon Eubanks of Nashville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn O’Neill Stovall Jones and a son, Alvis Wilbon Jones in 1971 and three brothers, Murphy Jones, Clifton (A.C.) Jones and Oral Jones.
