Irene Rankin

Irene Daniel Keller Rankin, 86, of Oak Ridge, TN, formerly of Saulsbury, died Thursday, May 17, 2007 at her home.



Mrs. Rankin was born July 11, 1920, in Benton County, Miss., daughter of the late E. F. and Effie Daniel and grew up in Saulsbury. She graduated from Grand Junction High School and attended the University of Tennessee. She started work for the Atomic Energy Commission in June, 1947, and served in several management positions before retiring as the Director of the Production Management Division of the Department of Energy in May, 1986.



Mrs. Rankin was a charter member of First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, TN, where she helped establish the Church History Room. In addition, she served in several capacities at the church, including Sunday school teacher, member and chairperson of various committees, as well as deacon and chairperson of deacons. She also often attended services at Grace Covenant Church in Oak Ridge, TN, in the years prior to her death.



She is survived by two sisters, Eva Harding of Memphis and Jennie Nevels of Birmingham, AL; three stepchildren, Harriet White, Margaret Downie and Samuel E. Rankin; five grandchildren, Joseph Downie, Heather Bailey, Kathleen Downie, Jeremy Downie, Alice White, and one great-granddaughter, Bella Downie, as well as a number of sisters-andbrothers-in-law, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.



She was widowed by A. C. Keller, Jr. who died October 6, 1978 after 39 years of marriage, and Dr. Samuel Rankin who died in 2001. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert F. Daniel, Simpson W. Daniel, Rufus D. Daniel, and Lavern S. Daniel.
