Henderson: Velma Irene Spencer Carter, age 86, died Thursday morning, September 11, 2008 at Chester County Healthcare.
Mrs. Carter was born and reared in Chester County, near Enville, the daughter of the late James Riley and Roeaney Addeline Fields Spencer. She attended school at Cash School House. She moved to Memphis in 1938 and worked for Fischer Aircraft during World War II. In 1945 she was married to Boyce Leonard Carter. They made their home in Memphis where she worked for General Electric for twenty years as a quality control inspector.
They moved to Henderson in 1987 where she worked for Jerry’s Sportswear.
She was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary. She was a long time member of the Chester County Senior Citizens and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Henderson.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Boyce Leonard Carter, Jr. and a brother Delmer Spencer of Elkhart, In.
She was preceded in death by two brothers: Robert Spencer and Elmer Spencer and six sisters: Flossie Wade, Minnie Benson, Ester Sharpe, Tennie Pusser, Perlie Hutton, and Jessie Grantham.
