Funeral services for Hazel Adcock Steadman, age 103, educator and librarian, will be on Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at 1:30 PM at Shackelford Funeral Directrors of Selmer with interment to follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Dr. Paul Clayton and Bro. Mike Pilcher will officiate. Mrs. Steadman passed from this life on Sunday, July 8, 2007, in Selmer.
She was born to the late Rev. W. M. and Odella Adcock on December 30, 1903. She married J. R. Steadman who preceded her in death on September 18, 1938.
Mrs. Steadman received a Bachelor's Degree from Lambuth University and a Master's Degree and EDS from Peabody College at Vanderbilt. She was a recipient of the Lambuth University Outstanding Alumni Award and a former teacher and librarian in the McNairy County School System. She spent 11 years as head of libraries for the Shelby County public schools in Memphis and received numerous honors and national recognition for her work in Shelby County. Upon returning to Selmer, she was library director at Jack McConnico Memorial Library from 1984 until her retirement in 1995. She won the state of Tennessee Librarian of the Year award in 1994. She was instrumental in applying for and receiving numerous grants for the McConnico Memorial Library and in establishing the genealogical research department at the library.
Survivors are her daughters Mary Emma Floyd (Bryant) and Virginia Byrum (Jesse) both of Jackson, Tennessee. Also survived by grandchildren Carol Moore, Mark Floyd, Barbara Warner, Paula Young, Melissa Floyd, and John Byrum; Great grandchildren are Jessica Arwood, John Moore, Jennifer Moore, Sarah Moore, Elizabeth Floyd, Alex Floyd, Will Warner, Kaitlin Warner, Rachel Young, and Reese Byrum; Great great grandchildren are Baker Rhodes and Elizabeth Vales. Also survived by a brother Robert Adcock of Lakeland, Florida.
Other than her parents and husband, Mrs. Steadman was also preceded in death by a daughter, Marjorie Murdaugh, brother, Loyd Adcock, sister, Velda Willingham, grandson, Franklin Murdaugh, and great granddaughter Stephanie Arwood.
