Harry Morris Denton was born in Bolivar, Tennessee on July 29, 1935 to the late Harry Boyette Denton and Mary Williams Denton and passed away at home on June 21, 2009.
As a youngster, Morris was very active in the Boy Scouts, eventually earning his Eagle Scout. He graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy, Lebanon, TN in 1953. He served with the United States Navy 1953-1956. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, Morris attended Memphis State University earning his B.B.A.. He received his JD from UT Knoxville in 1961.
While at UT, he received the prestigious honor of the Order of the Coif. He was a member of Phi Delta Phi (President, Roosevelt Inn, 1961) and Editor-in-Chief of the Tennessee Law Review, 1961. He was admitted to the Tennessee bar in 1961 and moved home to Bolivar to open his private practice. He served as Alderman for the City of Bolivar 1978-1980 and City Attorney for the City of Bolivar 1985-1995. He was a member of the Hardeman County and Tennessee Bar Associations, serving in the House of Delegates 1978-1980 and Board of Governors 1980-1983. He was also a member of the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association; the American Board of Trial Advocates, Emeritus Advocate; and a Fellow with the Tennessee Bar Foundation. He was a member of the Bolivar First United Methodist Church.
Morris is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Rosemary Haack Denton; five children, Brad Denton (Beverly), Rosemary Carter (Tim), Boyette Denton (Melissa), Brett Denton, and Margarette Denton; ten grandchildren, Ryan Denton, Russ Carter, Greg Carter, Logan Carter, Lindsey Denton, Drew Denton, Natalie Denton, Blake Denton, Lauren Denton and Hunter Denton; and two great-grandchildren, Rylie Paige Carter and Katie Jane Carter; two sisters, Beverly Emerson and Marion Nuckolls.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Shearin.
