Dr. Harold L. Fitts passed away on October 3, 2010, at Jackson-madison County General Hospital after an 8 year battle with multiple myeloma.
Born and reared in Silerton, he was the son of the late John Raymond (J.R.) Fitts and Lorada Deberry Fitts. He married the former Dorothy Deaton on June 15, 1958. Dr. Fitts had a dental practice in Memphis for two years and in Bolivar for 44 years. He was a member of Bolivar First United Methodist Church.
Dr. Fitts graduated from Bolivar Central High School in 1949 then attended Union University in Jackson. He graduated from Dental School at the University of Tennessee in Memphis in 1957.
He served on the Bolivar City Council from 1965-84, as Vice-Mayor for 16 years and then Mayor from 1984-1993. He also served on the Bolivar Utility Board, the First South Bank Board of Directors and has been a member of the Lions Club. He has achieved the level of Scottish Rites in the Shriner Organization. He has also received the Outstanding Service and Leadership Award while serving as President of the Tennessee State Board of Dentistry. He also has served as President of the Southern Regional Testing Agency (Dental Testing Board) from 1997-1998.
He leaves his wife, Dorothy Deaton Fitts; one brother, Charles Raymond (Jack) Fitts and his wife, Ima of Henderson; a daughter, Mary Leslie Fitts Hoover and her husband, James of Adamsville; three sons, Harold "Lee" Fitts, II and his wife, Marie, of Cordova, William Anthony "Tony" Fitts and his wife, Nancy, of Jackson and "Barry" Ray Fitts and his wife, Lori, of Spring Hill, Tenn.; and 8 grandchildren, Matt and Jon Hoover, Will and Summer Fitts, Cody Fitts, and Jordan, Shelby and Hayden Fitts; and three brothers in law, Willie Deaton, James L. Deaton and Donald R. Deaton.
