H. M. Griffis, 88, of Middleton, died Tuesday evening, December 6, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis.
The widower of Melba C. Griffis, who died August 18, 1994 after 50 years of marriage, he served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years, owned and operated two service stations for 8 years, drove a school bus for 20 years and was a farmer. Mr. Griffis was born August 20, 1917 in Sparks, Georgia, son of the late Math and Evelyn Brooks Griffis and moved to Middleton in 1969. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve as well as Porter’s Creek Baptist Church.
Services were 2 pm Sunday, December 11, 2005 at Porter’s Creek Baptist Church with Frank Bell and Adrian Knipper officiating. Burial was in Porter’s Creek Cemetery. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar were in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by one daughter and son, Mary Evelyn Grissom and James Carol Griffis, both of Memphis; one brother, Raymond Griffis of Conroe, Tex.; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
