H. D. (Detrois) Bridges
H. D. (Detrois) Bridges of Milledgeville, TN passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 4, 2008 surrounded by his loving family at the age of 87 years 9 months. H.D. was born on March 4, 1921 in Hardin County, TN to the late James Elbert and Linnie Mae Pearson Bridges. He married Dorothy L. Rickman on December 23, 1947 and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last December 23rd. To this union four children were born, three sons and one daughter who survive him. Mike Bridges (wife June) of Enville, Deborah Jensen (friend Ron) of Madison, WI, Richie Bridges of Milledgeville, and Nicky Bridges (wife Darlene) of Henderson, TN and seven grandchildren, Suzanne Bridges, Phil Bridges, Tequila Bridges Thurman (grandson-in-law Justin Thurman), Nick Bridges, Eric Jensen, Jacqueline Jensen, and Brian Bridges; and one great granddaughter Paxten Bridges and three step-grandchildren Katie Boone, Derrick Boone (wife Candace), and Laura Boone. He is also survived by two brothers and three sisters, Fay Bridges (wife Vera Faye), James Bridges (wife Lois), Juanita Greene, Robbie Powell, and Rose Hardin. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, one brother, grandson Luke Bridges, and most recently daughter-in-law Judy Bridges.
He was educated in the Hardin County school system and graduated from Morris Chapel High School in 1942 where he was active in sports and an accomplished baseball catcher. He played on an independent baseball team for the Milledgeville Red Birds. He was such a talented catcher that when he was behind the plate, no runner would attempt to steal bases. H.D. owned and operated Bridges Supermarket and Café in Milledgeville for 31 years and Milledgeville Worm Ranch before retiring. He also enjoyed farming and raising cattle. Before his health began to deteriorate in June 2008, he enjoyed traveling with Dot and close friends Frank and Peggy Wilson.
Detrois was a 50 year member of the Royal Arch Masons and a dedicated member of the Shriner’s and severed as member of the 32nd degree Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Eastern Star where he served in many capacities including worthy patron. H.D. was a faithful member of the Milledgeville United Methodist Church where he was an active member of the choir and served on the administrative board. He was instrumental in assisting with the incorporation of the town of Milledgeville where he served on the first town board for many years.
