He was born and reared in Enville, son of the late Rufus Edward and Hassie Smith Cherry. He attended school in Enville and graduated Chester County High School in 1943 and received a B.S. Degree at U.T. Knoxville. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, serving in the European Theatre of Operations and attended law school but did not graduate. He was employed by the Internal Revenue Service as an agent from 1949 until retirement in 1971, due to poor health. Since that time he continued to make his home in Memphis. He was a member of the Berclair Church of Christ in Memphis.
He is survived by a son Joseph Edward (Joe) Cherry of Delaware; a daughter, Georgia Camise Cherry Strunk of Knoxville; two grandchildren, Grace Paschall and Elise Cherry.
He was preceded in death by a son Bobby Cherry and a brother, Frank Hardeman Cherry.
