George Walter Phenton Avent, 85, of Bolivar, died Tuesday afternoon, March 15, 2005 at Bolivar General Hospital.
The husband of Helen Darby Avent, who survives, he was retired as a maintenance supervisor with International Shoe Company in 1982 and was most recently a farmer. Mr. Avent was born February 26, 1920 in Hardeman County, son of the late Sam and Hester Callahan Avent and lived here most of his life. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a member of the Farm Bureau as well as the Bemis Church of Christ.
Services were 2 p.m. Friday, March 18 at Shackelford's chapel in
Bolivar with Ed Ballard and David Cooper officiating. Burial was in
Middleburg Cemetery near Hickory Valley.
In addition to his wife, whom he married January 3, 2000, survivors
include eight children, Emily Hammons of Bolivar, Elizabeth
McCommon of Collierville, Hazel Aldrich of Ketchikan, Alaska, Hester Cardenas of Beech Bluff, Bill Avent of Columbia, Georgia Phillip of Germantown, Elaine Haino of Waipahu, Hawaii and Ricky Avent of Bolivar; four step-children, Susan Reeves of Collierville, Ron Darby and Thomas Shoe, both of Jackson and Larry Shoe of Fayetteville, Arkansas; two brothers, Jim Avent of Whiteville and Benny Avent of Michie; three sisters, Margaret Vincent of Nashville, Bernice Sandy of Corinth, Mississippi and Emma Louise Sain of Bolivar and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
