Mr. Fred Tucker was born in the Buckley - Tucker home in Luray, Tennessee, where his family has lived since the 1840’s. His parents were William Fredrick and Mary Elizabeth Witherspoon Tucker. He attended Grammar School in Mifflin and later graduated from Chester County High School in 1942. After graduation, he attended UT Martin for 1 year prior to being drafted into the US Army Air Corp, serving as a radio operator in the European Theater of Operations and also North Africa receiving three bronze stars and the Victory medal. After service he returned to UT Martin earning an AA Degree and later attended Columbia University receiving a Masters in Agriculture in 1953. He worked for the state of Tennessee Ag Extension service for a few years and later taught school in Henderson County. Mr. Tucker also worked for the Tennessee Dept. of Transportation as a Supervisor Survey Engineer. He was a member of The American Legion Post 157 in Henderson where he had served as Adjunct. He was a member of The Beech Bluff United Methodist Church and had served as song leader, Director of Music and Sunday school teacher.
He is survived by his wife Betty Tucker of Luray; two sons, Paul Tucker and Michael Tucker both of Luray; three grandchildren, Beau (Rebecca) Sage, Skylar Sage, and Scarlett Sage; two great-grandchildren, Eli Sage and Emma Gaskill.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Tucker Sage Dorris (2015), two sisters, Virginia Winifred Tucker and Mary Elizabeth Tucker, and a brother, William Clarke Tucker.
Celebration of life will be 5:00 PM Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Johnson Chapel with Bro. Harry DeLoach and Bro. Richard Clark officiating.
