F. C. ‘Ted’ Mitchell, age 83, retired Major, United States Air Force, died Friday, April 17, 2009 at College Oak Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sacramento, CA.
Mr. Mitchell was born and reared in McNairy County, the Finger community, the son of the late John (C.E.) Clarence Edmund and Maudie Mae Hutcherson Mitchell. He graduated from Chester County High School in 1943 and entered the Army Aviation Cadet Pilot Training Program in October 1943. He graduated as a pilot in April 1945 and became a flight instructor in August 1945 in San Angelo, Texas. He was separated from the Army Air Force in February 1946. He went to work at Lowry AFB, Colorado as a fire fighter. In September, 1948, he entered the University of Colorado graduating in June 1951, with a B.A. in the Physical Sciences and a minor in Education. He was hired by the Air Force in June 1951 as an Armament School instructor, teaching radar and fire control systems in F-86, F-84, and F-80 day and night fighter aircraft.
In September 1952 he was recalled to active duty from the reserve, and was a AB-36 and AB-47 crew member in the Strategic Air Command. In 1963 he attended the Air Force Institute of Technology at the University of Oklahoma. He graduated in July 1965 with a B.S. in math and a minor in meteorology. He was a weather forecaster at Kadena AB, Okinawa from 1965 to 1968. In 1968 he was assigned again to the cockpit and a combat tour in South East Asia (Vietnam War) in RB-66’s from June 1968 to June 1969.
His next military assignment was Andrews AFB, Maryland as Chief Forecaster, June 1969 to September 1970. Among his favorite customers at Andrews AFB were the special mission aircraft of the 1st Composite Wing, including AF 1, AF 2, and Special Mission Aircraft of all the VIP’s in the Washington, D.C. Federal Government.
He was married to Doris Charlene Engle, in April 1945 and they had three children. Teddy Clark was born in July 1946, Diana Lynn in December 1948, and David Kenton in March 1952. Doris and Ted were divorced in December 1959. Ted married a second time in March 1961, to Mitsuko Shimote a native of Japan. They have no children.
Ted retired from the Air Force in September 1970 and settled in Sacramento, CA. He retired as a Major, and had completed 20 ½ years active service plus seven years in the reserves. He became a Real Estate Broker after his retirement and retired a second time from that profession in about 1998.
He was a Life Member of the Retired Officers Association, and the VFW. He leaves his wife Mitsuko Shimote Mitchell of Sacramento, two sons; Teddy Clark Mitchell of Santa Barbara, CA, David Kenton Mitchell of Sedalia, CO, a daughter, Diana Lynn Hunt of Lamont, IL, nine grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and hundreds of Tennessee friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by brothers; John L., George Wayne, Howell, and Ovid Mitchell and a sister Allie Mae Stephens.
