Elma Sue Davis

May 23, 1920 — October 16, 2008

Mrs. Davis died Thursday morning at her home in Hendersonville.



The daughter of the late James Wesley and Freddie Tickle Davis, she was a 1940 graduate of Bolivar Central High School and on Christmas eve of that year married William Oscar Davis. Mr. Davis died July 29, 1994 after 53 years of marriage. Mrs. Davis lived in Hickory Valley from 1945 to 1997, when she moved to Hendersonville.



While in Hickory Valley, she was a member of the Hickory Valley Baptist church where she taught the teen-age Sunday School class, served as church secretary, complied a 150 year history of the church, was in the WMU and planned Vacation Bible Schools. She also served Hickory Valley as a city councilwoman and assistant postmaster.



She worked as a certification clerk with the Tennesee Department of Human Services. She served on the War Price Board during World War II issuing gas permits and as bookkeeper for the Hickory Valley Gin.



She leaves her daughter Vonnie Sue Davis Ullery and a son, James O. Davis and his wife, Estelle, all of Hendersonville; two sisters, Jimmie Elizabeth Keller and husband, Joe of Whiteville and Sara Sanders James and husband, Robert of Chester, MD; a sister-in-law, Faye Brazeale Sanders of Loudon, TN; seven grandchildren, Susan Starr Ullery, Samuel Curtis Ullery, William Raymond Ullery, Amy Michelle Ullery, Rebecca Ruth Ullery, Allison Davis Jones and James O. Davis, Jr.; nine great-grandchildren, Jeremy Daniel Rolen, Ashely Elizabeth Jones, Skylar Starr Ullery, Bella Raene Ullery, John Grant, Kaitlin Grant, Taylor Danielle Davis, Coleton Oscar Davis and Thomas Seth Davis.



In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Henrietta Christine Sanders, Freda Dorris Sanders Todd and husband, Malcolm, Annie Ruth Sanders Wheeler and husband, Robert, Mary Margaret Sanders Breeden and husband, Neely; and two brothers, Thomas Robert Sanders and wife, Elizabeth and Ivo W. Sanders.
