Mr. Edward Earl Ponder of Bolivar, TN departed this life at 90 years Saturday afternoon, April 27, 2013 at Bolivar General Hospital.
Mr. Ponder was born in Gadsden, Alabama March 10, 1923 to the late Jodie and Susie Turner Ponder. While working at a cotton mill in 1943, he met his first wife, Ruby Grace Ponder, who passed away November 1, 1958. While he lived in Gadsden, he was a devout member of the South Gadsden Baptist Church. In 1962, he married Josephine Douglas Ponder, who survives.
The two moved to Memphis where he worked for Layne & Bowler prior to retirement and lived there for about 11 years. They moved to Bolivar in 1985 where he was the owner and operator of Sunlight Donuts; he was famous for his yummy desserts.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the US Marine Corps for three and a half years. A member of Bolivar First Baptist Church in Bolivar, he sang in the Golden Sounds Choir. His family remembers him as a loving husband and a good friend to many. Among his hobbies, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include, along with his wife, a son, Archie Dale Ponder of Granite, Oklahoma; a step-daughter, Jo Ann Murry of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Rosa Lee Ponder Pollard and Ruby Jewel Ponder Shed, both of Alabama; and seven grandchildren. In addition to his parents and first wife, he is preceded in death by a son, Jerome Alan Ponder; a daughter, Charlotte Diane Ponder; a sister, Betty Jean Ponder Gray; and three brothers, William H. Ponder, Burl Jodie Ponder and James H. Ponder.
