Funeral services for Earl Shands, 80, of Huntsville, AL, formerly of Hartselle, AL will be Saturday, Feb 16, 2008 at 2 pm at Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel, Waynesboro, TN with Fulton Smith officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens, Waynesboro, with Shackelford Funeral Directors of Wayne County directing. Visitation will be Friday, Feb 15, 2008 from 5 pm to 9 pm at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be grandsons. He died at Floyd E. “Tut†Fann, State Veterans Home in Huntsville, AL on Wednesday, Feb 13, 2008 following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
He was born September 1, 1927 in Collinwood, TN to the late Ollie and Marie Nowlin Shands and grew up in the Ovilla community. Mr. Shands served as a lithographer in the U. S. Army, in the South Pacific, during WW II and was stationed in Tokyo as part of the occupation forces following the war. In, 1945, he suffered a broken back in a jeep accident in Tokyo while serving in the Army and was left partially disabled. He was a lifelong member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.
On December 30, 1950, Earl married Delois Delphine Throgmorton of Waynesboro, TN. They made their home in Waynesboro until August, 1968, when Earl’s employment took them to Columbia, TN.
Mr. Shands previously owned a Sally Ann Bread franchise and was employed by Pulaski Pure Milk Company serving Wayne, Lawrence, and Hardin Counties in Tennessee. He was employed for a time by Murray Ohio in Lawrenceburg, TN. In 1968, he took a position with Uncle Charlie’s Meat in Columbia, TN, becoming the company troubleshooter and was sent to manage offices in financial trouble and eventually held the manager’s position in Cookeville, Tullahoma, Savannah, Murfreesboro, and Nashville, TN and Gadsden and Florence, AL, retiring in 1986.
