Donald was born February 15, 1942. His parents, Roy and Gladys Huggins raised him and his sister Ada Ellen in the Gravel Hill Community. Don's brother, Royce, died at a young age with a bleeding disorder.
As a child, Don attended school at Gravel Hill until the 7th grade. He transferred to Ramer Elementary when he was in the 8th grade. He enjoyed riding horses. He and his friend, James Opal Gray, loved to travel over the country side and their parents allowed them to as long as they were home by dark. They had some near death experiences as they experimented with TNT.
After graduating from High School Don decided that he wanted to see the world. On May 21, 1959 Don signed up for the Marines. On May 25th he was sworn in. Don did get to see the world, but only after he had gone through Boot Camp and was trained to look and act like a Marine.
Throughout his military career he went to Panama, Guantanomo Bay, Viagus Island, Puerto Rico, Morrocco, Tangiers, Gibralter, Mirakesh, the Algeria Border and the Dominican Republic. He went all over the Mediterannen Sea with the fleet Marine Force. He was stationed with the Second Marine Division in Camp Lejune, North Carolina.
On June 25th, 1965 he was honorably discharged and came back to Selmer.
He went to work in Memphis for Velsicol Chemical Plant where he spent 13 years. In 1976, Don came back to McNairy County to work at the McNairy County Sheriff's Department. In 1979, he met Donna Fuchs, they had a two year courtship and were married September 4, 1981 at Acton Church of Christ. Don and his family attended church at the Fourth Street church of Christ in Selmer, Tennessee. Donald has two sons, Trent and Jeffrey, and one daughter, Leala. He has one grandson, Gavin, and two grandaughters, Marley and Alexis. Don worked at the McNairy County Sheriff's Department until he retired in September of 2008. During his employment as deputy sheriff, Don held positions as the Youth Service Officer, Dare Instructor, FireArms Instructor and Training Officer. He also had the honor of attending the FBI Academy at Quantico, Virginia in 1986. He was a recipient of the Lions Club Citizen of the Year award as well as Police officer of the Year award.
Of all his experiences in life, he loved and enjoyed his family best. He enjoyed his children's church and school activities, the band concerts, the football games, the Boy Scout activities and the Jazz Cat concerts. He always enjoyed seeing his children do well.
