Deborah Lynn Appling Burks

Deborah Lynn Appling Burks, born September 17, 1953 in Memphis, TN, peacefully passed away on October 27, 2023, in Selmer, Tennessee. She was the beloved daughter of the late Robert Henry and Anna Massey Appling.

On April 29, 1977, Deborah joined in matrimony with Neal Burks, a union that would bring them love and companionship for an incredible 46 years.

Deborah dedicated many years of her life to serving her community. She worked tirelessly for the McNairy County Board of Education at Selmer Elementary and Selmer Middle Schools. Additionally, she owned the South Precinct Restaurant in Selmer. Her warm smile, listening ear, and willingness to engage in conversation endeared her to everyone she encountered. But it was her heartfelt affection for children that truly set her apart.

Known lovingly as "B" to her adoring grandchildren and numerous other children whose lives she touched, Deborah nurtured a deep bond with each one of them.

Deborah's faith was an integral part of her life. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Bethel Springs and also found solace in attending Michie First Baptist Church.

She leaves behind a legacy of love cherished by those closest to her. Deborah is survived by her devoted husband, Neal Burks of Selmer, TN; daughter, Heather Maxedon and husband Brett of Selmer, TN; son,  Michael Brandon Burks of Selmer, TN; stepdaughter, Jil Cooper and husband, Brent; nine adoring grandchildren: Analyn, Allie, Austin Maxedon; Nathan and Preston Burks; Will and Amanda Cooper; Jon Franklin and Linzi Burks; two brothers: William Barry Appling and his wife Cyndi, and Robert Ernest Appling; host of extended family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Burks was preceded in death by a stepson, Jon Burks. 

Her legacy will continue to inspire us to approach life with unwavering love, compassion, and kindness. Deborah's warm presence will be deeply missed but forever treasured.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
