Deborah Ann Burkeen

Deborah Ann Burkeen, a cherished member of the Whiteville community, passed away on January 3, 2025, at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Born on February 13, 1958, in Somerville, Deborah was known for her unwavering dedication to public service and her love for family, friends, and community.

Deborah had a distinguished career that spanned fifteen years with the Whiteville Police Department, where she retired as a Sergeant. Her commitment to safety extended beyond her official duties as she volunteered with the Whiteville Fire Department for forty years. In this role, she served as a safety coordinator and a first responder, demonstrating her servant's heart—a quality that defined her character throughout her life. Additionally, she made her mark in local government, serving as a Whiteville City Alderman for five years, during which she actively contributed to the welfare of her community.

A proud advocate for children in need, Deborah was instrumental in establishing the Whiteville "Angel Tree," a program dedicated to providing holiday gifts to local children. Her involvement on the Hardeman County 911 committee further showcased her commitment to enhancing community safety.

Beyond her professional pursuits, Deborah found joy in simpler pleasures. She cherished time spent at the farm with her family, nurtured her love for gardening, and had a particular fondness for flowers. Deborah was an avid player of bunko for over thirty years, enjoyed collecting angels and anything related to cardinals. A passionate fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, she embraced the spirit of the holidays with her talent for decorating.

Deborah is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Ernie Burkeen of Whiteville, whom she married on June 4, 1976, and their children, Leslie Nuce (Joshua) of Southaven, MS, and Brandon Burkeen of Whiteville. She also leaves behind a sister, Bridget Amanda Morris of Jackson; and a brother, Joe Allen Morris (Melanie) of Whiteville; her sister-in-law, Tonya Perry (Raymond) of Crump, TN; her brother-in-law, David Burkeen (Stephanie) of Medon;  as well as nieces, Sandy Hill (Bryan), Heather Burkeen and Amanda Patton (Jamie); and nephews, Thomas Allen Morris (Keri), Devin Ripper and Ky Ripper. Her granddaughter, Paetience Nuce (Roberto), brought her immense joy. Deborah's legacy continues through many cousins, including a special bond with cousin, Buggie McQueen of Whiteville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Shirley Mae Holland Morris and Allen Morris.

Memorials may be sent to the Whiteville Fire Department, c/o Whiteville City Hall, P. O. Box 324, Whiteville, TN 38075.
