D.C. King

March 14, 1929 — October 7, 2006

Dr. D.C. King of Henderson died Saturday night, October 7, 2006 in his home after a long illness. He professed faith in Christ as an adult.

Dr. King was born in Bemis, TN the third child of Delana Chambers King and General Colby King. He attended schools in Bemis and graduated from J.B.Young High School in 1946. He joined the Navy immediately after high school and served as a corp-man. It was during this time that he became interested in medicine. After being discharged from the Navy in 1948 he enrolled at Union University on the GI Bill. He was a member of the Union basketball team and Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He graduated in 1952.

He attended medical school in Memphis at UTCHS. While a student there he met and married a registered nurse, Sarah Jean Graves of Dyersburg, TN. In 1955 he completed medical school and began an internship at Columbia Hospital of Richmond County in Columbia, South Carolina.

After completing his internship he and his family moved to Henderson, TN where he joined Dr. Paul Williams. Their practice was located in the Stedman Guy Clinic on White Avenue. In just a few months Dr. Williams moved on to specialize in orthopaedics. Soon Dr. King was joined by Dr. Harold Thomas . In 1956 they changed their name to the Henderson Clinic. Shortly Dr. Thomas moved to Savannah, TN and left Dr. King in solo practice.

He continued in solo practice until 1985 when he was joined by his son, Dr. Jim King. Later in 1989, his daughter, Laura Melaro joined as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Dr. King remained in full-time practice until June 1998. He was diagnosed at this time with renal failure and began kidney dialysis. He practiced part time until March 1999 when he retired. He continued on dialysis for the remainder of his life.

Throughout his life Dr. King enjoyed practicing medicine more than anything. He delivered babies, made house calls, and was paid many times in agricultural produce. He loved his patients and had a large and colorful practice.

When he was not seeing patients Dr. King liked to pretend he was a used car salesman at Gunn Bros. Automotive. He was really quite good at it. He was also an avid Tennessee Walking Horse fan. He loved to ride and show and did so throughout the Mid-South. When he got together with his “horse buddies” they usually enjoyed several rounds of poker.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sarah Jean King; for the last 5 years she was his constant companion and caregiver. Also he leaves three sons and one daughter, twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. Jim and Sandra (Frank) King of Selmer & their children-Jon, Emily & Ben.
