Mr. Mathes passed away Wednesday, January 30 at Bolivar General Hospital.
The husband of DeAnna Newman Mathes, who survives, he was a musician/producer/engineer in the Nashville music industry. He was the first independent music engineer with NRS Records which he owned and operated, Sweetsinger (BMI) and Sing Sweeter (ASCAP). He gave many musicians their start in Nashville and was nominated for three Grammys in various aspects of the music business. He earned his Phd. in music and was lead guitarist and traveled with the Imperials gospel group. He also traveled on the 50th Anniversary tour with the Swanee River Boys. Mr. Mathes served in the US Army Airforce and was past president of the Hardeman County Arts Council. He was a Seventh Day Adventist.
In addition to his wife, whom he married on September 8, 1978, survivors include two daughters, Lori Bass of Knoxville and Melody Weist of Lebanon; a son, Dwayne David Mathes of Hendersonville; and three grandchildren, Lacey Arianna Billingsley; Alicia Nicole Mathes and Justin Michael David Mathes. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
