Coy Jean Jernigan Jeter

Coy Jean Jernigan Jeter, age 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 1, 2024 in Selmer, TN. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She was born on March 7, 1934 to the late Samuel Elby King and Flossie Mae Smith King. Coy was the third of sixteen children.

Coy’s childhood days were spent in the Rosecreek community where she attended school and helped care for her younger siblings. In 1952, Coy fell in love with and married the late Austin Jernigan with whom she had two sons. Coy and Austin were married for 37 years and had built a beautiful life together. After the passing of Mr. Jernigan, Coy was remarried to the late Conard Jeter gaining three more children whom she loved as her own. She was a hard and dedicated worker at ITT where she retired after working 20 plus years. Coy was a member of the Sanctified Church of Christ in the Rosecreek Community, TN. 

In her spare time, she enjoyed putting puzzles together, traveling, spending time with her grandbabies, gardening, and she could grow a breathtaking flowerbed. 

She is survived by her children: Keith Jernigan, Jason Jeter (and children), and Lisa Gunn (Tim)(and children); grandchildren: Brooke Hearnsberger (Drew), Brittany Connor (Mason), Hunter Jernigan (Kailey); great-grandchildren: Siler Hearnsberger and Bowen Connor; Sisters: Jo Seidler (Fred), Kathy Dye, and Patricia Exum (Don); and a host of nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her husbands and parents, Ms. Jeter was proceeded in death by her sons, Christopher Jernigan and Mark Jeter; a grandson, Austin Jared Jernigan; a great-granddaughter, Ellie Marie Hearnsberger; 12 brothers and sisters.
