CLAY MATTHEWS
Clarksville, TN: Clay J. Matthews, age 91 passed away September 7, 2016 at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro, TN.
He was born January 28, 1925 in Luxora, AR and reared in Blytheville, AR, the son of the late Clay Matthews and Elvia Mae McGlaughlin Matthews. He went to school in AR. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 during WWII serving in the Seabees in the Philippines, South Pacific. He married JoAnn Adair in 1949. They made their home in Blytheville, AR. They moved to Chicago and then to Henderson where Clay owned and operated all three Exxon Stations in Henderson. In 1977 he moved to Pascagoula, MS and managed a storage warehouse until 1985 then moved back to Henderson until 1987 then moved to Clarksville, TN. Mrs. JoAnn died in 2003.
Mr. Matthews is survived by two sons, Stanley Matthews of Clarksville and Eddie Matthews and wife Brenda of Henderson; three daughters, Karen Matthews of Clarksville, Jody Kitchens and husband Vic of Clarksville and Laurie South and husband Jim of Florence, AL; eleven grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, JoAnn Matthews in 2003 a son, David Matthews in 1986 and a grandson, Alan Ross in 1994.
Funeral services will be 4:30 PM Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel. Burial will follow in Chester County Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Casey Chapel beginning at 1:00 PM Sunday until service time.
