He was born in Memphis and grew up in Henderson and Jackson, the son of Charles E. Whitten and Shirley Weaver Ray. He graduated from South Side High School in 1983 and graduated with honors from Tennessee Tech in Cookeville with a degree in Business Administration. He worked as an auditor for Arthur Anderson in Nashville and then worked for International Paper as an auditor, living in various places across the country and settled in Washington, DC in 1993.
He is survived by his parents, Charles and Polly Whitten of Jackson and Shirley and Donald Ray of Jackson; a sister, Dawn Whitten of Jackson; two nephews Wesley Whitten-Blankenship and Coady Freeman; two step brothers, Chris Ray of Medina and Tim Ray of Valley View, CA; three step sisters, Robin Shealy of Newman, GA, Kate Goodwin of Urbana, IL and Celia Lighthall of Brewster, NY and two best friends, Tommy West of Washington, DC and Nancy Phillips of Fairview, TN.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Reggie Whitten in 1991.
