Christine Harris

Finger, TN: Rachel Christine Brown Harris, age 98, passes away Thursday morning, August 1, 2024, at her home in Finger. 

Mrs. Harris was born and reared in Finger, the daughter of the late Henry Harrison and Bessie Lillian Lewis Brown. She attended school in Finger and graduated from Chester County High School.

Her first works were at the shoe factory in Selmer, Logan McCaskill Insurance, the cotton gin in the fall, and the shirt factory in Henderson. 

She married John Lloyd Harris December 16, 1944, and they made their home at Finger. After her daughters were born, she became the Finger Postmaster in 1961 and continued there twenty-seven years as her husband Lloyd served as Mayor of Finger. Mrs. Harris also assisted in the mayor’s office as bookkeeper.

Mrs. Harris loved animals, especially her dog Jazzime. She was a very giving and caring individual. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, solitaire, gameshows, and was an avid reader. She attended the First Baptist Church in Finger.

She is survived by two daughters; Tammy Porter and husband Steve of Collierville and Rhonda Davis and husband Weiss of Selmer, four grandchildren; Julie Tucker and husband Ladron, Trent Davis, Grant Porter, and Rachel Porter and three great granddaughters; Hayden, Harris, and Jillian Tucker and by a very special friend Teddy Wayne Hysmith, who Christine considered as a son, and his wife Phyllis and their granddaughter Myah. The family wishes to recognize Mrs. Harris’s caretakers; Patricia Crowe and Shirley Prenatt.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lloyd in 2000, and sister Lorraine McKenzie and her husband James. 

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, August 8 at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue in Henderson with David Sims officiating. Burial will follow at Finger Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Shackelford’s Crook Avenue from 11:00 AM Thursday until funeral time of 2:00 PM.
