CARLTON MORTON
Henderson: Walter Carlton Morton, age 97, died December 30, 2008 at Chester County Healthcare.
He was born and reared in Crockett County, the son of the late Walter Scott and Katie Maxwell Morton. He graduated from Hamlett–Robertson High School at Crockett Mills in 1930. He established Morton Brothers Store at Crockett Mills as a young man. He was married to Rubye Lindsey in 1936 and they lived in Henderson for 72 years together.
He entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations abroad the USS LST–731during World War II and witnessed the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima.
He returned to Henderson and was a partner with Slim Bolton in Bolton Motor Company for 21 years. He established the Queens Cup and also established Morton Auto Parts in 1961 and was a business partner in Bonwood Auto Parts in Jackson and also helped establish Harper Auto Parts at Alamo.
He had been a member of the Henderson Church of Christ for 65 years and had served as a deacon for 25 years. He served as the church treasurer and was involved in benevolence for many years.
He served 12 years as a Henderson City Alderman, 15 years on the Heritage Towers Board, 16 years on the Freed-Hardeman University President’s Advisory Board and had served on the Henderson Industrial Board.
He was a member of the American Legion, former Commander of the VFW, and a long time member of the Chester County Lions Club, serving in many offices and in 1991 was awarded the Lions International, Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.
He is survived by his wife, Rubye Lindsey Morton of Henderson; two daughters, Cindy Harper and husband Larry of Alamo and Martha Naylor and husband Tommy of Henderson; four grandchildren, Chris Harper, Mica Naylor, Jana Mills and husband Nic and Joel Harper; two great grandchildren, Sarah Harper and Lindsey Grace Freeman.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Aubrey Morton and two sisters, Chastine Morton and Maxine Shearin.
