Carl T. Tallent
was born in Giles County, Tennessee on January 27, 1921 the son of the late George Henry and Lucie Betty Prosser Tallent. On May 8, 1943 he was united in marriage to the former Thelma Denton, who survives.
Mr. Tallent was on active duty with the United States Army 384th Field Artillery Battalion from March 21, 1940 through September 28, 1945, serving in Northern France, the Rhineland, Central Europe, and the Ardennes. He earned 4 Bronze Stars, an American Defense Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Ribbon. On November 25, 1950 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant with the National Guard; he was promoted to 1st Lt. on December 29, 1954, and to Captain on July 8, 1958. Mr. Tallent retired from military service as a Captain and Company Commander of the Savannah/Hardin County National Guard.
Mr. Tallent was the founder and President of Hunter, Smith, & Tallent Furniture Company and a founding member of the Hardin County Bank where he served as a Director and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors. Numerous opportunities for service presented themselves through his memberships in the Savannah church of Christ, the Lions Club, and the Rotary Club. His continued dedication to the community led him to accept positions as a member of the Savannah Utility Board of Directors and the Board of Directors of the Hardin County Chamber of Commerce, where he previously served as President.
Mr. Tallent departed this life at Hardin Medical Center on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at the age of 87 years, 2 months, 26 days.
In addition to his wife, Thelma, he is survived by a daughter: Joyce Tallent Speight and her husband David Larry of Cleveland, Tennessee; a son: Carl Thomas Tallent and his wife Patricia Ann of Savannah, Tennessee; a brother: Walter Gilbert Tallent of Giles County, Tennessee; a sister: Lillian Tallent Foster of Nashville, Tennessee; 4 grandchildren: David Henry Speight and his wife Jill of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Jonathan Mark Speight of Palm Springs, California, Jonathan Keith Tallent and his wife Kim of Shiloh, Tennessee, and Joyce Elaine Tallent of Savannah, Tennessee; 3 great-grandchildren: Macy Katherine Speight, Molly Elizabeth Speight, and Mallory Grace Speight all of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers: Leonard Lee Tallent and Staten Tallent, and a sister: Mary Eliza Tallent Simpson.
