Carl William Dunn

December 22, 1920 — January 14, 2005

Lt. Col. Carl William Dunn, Sr., 84, died Friday, January 14, 2005 at St. Francis Select Specialty Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.



Born December 22, 1920 in Collierville, he was the husband of Edna Marion Smith Dunn, who survives. Dunn was called to active duty while attending Mississippi State College. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the the U. S. Army Air Corps and received his Wings as a pilot in 1944. Assigned to the Eighth Air Force in World War II, he flew 33 combat missions from England in the B-17 aircraft over Germany and Occupied France. In 1952, he was assigned to 12th Air Force, flying L-20 Beavers in France and

Germany. He served in Korea with PACF and in Vietnam with a Special Operations Group, assigned to Headquarters, MACV. He was promoted to his present rank in 1966 and attained Command Pilot Status. During the course of his career he was awarded various service medals and decorations including 4 Air Medals, 2 Bronze Stars, 3 Legion of Merit Medals, and 2 Air Force Commendation Medals. His last assignment took him to Headquarters USAF, Pentagon, Washington, DC, where he retired from active duty on November 30, 1968.



Dunn served as alderman and 4 years as mayor of Grand Junction. He started Tennessee Pewter with Wade Smith in 1974 and served on the Hardeman County Industrial Development Board. Dunn was a member of the Grand Junction First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.



Services were 11 am Monday, January 17 at Shackelford's Bolivar chapelwith Dr. Frank Bulle and Juston Gates officating. Burial was in Grand Junction Cemetery.



In addition to his wife, whom he married June 4, 1946, he is survived by his sisters, Frances Brewer of Memphis and Betty Grace Bulle of Collierville; one brother, Byron Dunn of Collierville; 4 grandchildren, Laura Gattis, Christine Fowler, William Cross, and Raymond Cross; and 6 greatgrandchildren.
