Captain James L. Duke

Captain James L. Duke was born July 16, 1948 in Crawfordsville, Arkansas, the son of the late Leroy and Vera Lillian Cleary Duke.



He was united in marriage to Betty Ann Horvath on May 6, 2002.



Mr. Duke served his country for 43 years as a member of the U. S. Merchant Marine, United States Coast Guard, where he obtained the rank of Captain. He was a former member of the Selmer Moose Lodge and an active member of Trinity Baptist Church in Michie, TN.



Mr. Duke departed this life on February 29, 2012 in Michie, Tennessee at the age of 63 Years, 7 Months, 13 Days. He is survived by his wife Betty Ann (Horvath) Duke of Michie, TN; four daughters: Jeannine Nichols of Tarpon Springs, FL, Dawn Edwards and husband Darryl Collum of Michie, TN, Annette Turner and husband Stephen of Selmer, TN, and Melisa Duke of Memphis, TN; a son, Kenneth Lawler of Michie, TN; six grandchildren: Sabrina Sutton, Chelsea Byrd, Richard Charbono and wife Kristie, Garrett Turner, Abigail Gill, and Kenneth Lawler, Jr.; two great grandchildren, Blair Sutton and Ella Sutton; two sisters, Linda Duke of Greenwood, IN and Annette Duke of Sardis, TN; sister-in-law, Shirley Duke of Michie, TN; nieces, Jamie Dicks and Tonya Burris, both of Greenwood, IN, Kimberly Larue and Karen Williams both of Pope, MS, Kathy Pearson of Stafford, VA, Beverly Smith of Michie, TN, Tammy Barnard of Booneville, MS, Candy Coln of Rienzi, MS, Leslie Wood of Corinth, MS, Starla Pietranckyk of Dunkirk, NY, Jolano Lutkemeier of Sardis, TN and Crystal Attnip of Toone, TN; nephews, John Dicks and wife Sarah of Guys, TN, Dennis Larue of Memphis, TN, Steven Lambert and Edwin Duke both of Michie, TN, Jonathan Wiggins of AL and Jr. Wiggins of Henderson, TN; special great-nephew Nicholas Duke of Michie, TN; special brother-in-law Butch Dicks and wife Mary of Guys, TN; special cousin Frankie Cleary and wife Karen of Michie, TN; special friend Eddie Murphy of Memphis, TN; and many extended family and friends.



In addition to his parents, Mr. Duke was preceded in death by two sons, William Duke and James Duke, Jr.; three sisters: Doris Larue, Jeannette Gilliland, and Brenda Diane Duke; and three brothers: Earl Duke, Edwin Duke, and James E. Duke.
