C. H. PHILLIPS
Henderson: C. H. Phillips, age 85, died Saturday night, February 17, 2007, at his home of congestive heart failure.
Mr. Phillips was born in Hughes, AR, the son of the late Clarence Hix Phillips, Sr. and Effie Ann Carter Phillips. He grew up and attended schools in McNairy County. Mr. Phillips had worked as a welder all of his life.
He entered the U. S. Navy in 1942 and served during WWII in the Pacific abroad the USS Iowa Battleship as a Shipfitter First Class, returning home in 1945.
He was married to Georgia Beene in 1948 and they made their home in McNairy County, Memphis, and Tucson, AZ before making their home in Chester County in 1962. He owned and operated Phillips Welding Shop on South Church Street until his retirement in 1983.
He was a member of the Henderson Church of Christ. He was also a member of the VFW Post 4844 in Henderson, the Veterans Association of the USS Iowa and Woodmen of the World Lodge 40. He attended the reunions of the USS Iowa for over 25 years and also attended the decommissioning of the ship in 1984.
He was a member of the Chester County Senior Citizens. He and Mrs. Phillips were regular participants in the Senior Olympic Games and had won medals at both the Local and State Levels. He was also a member of the American Bowling Congress at Classic Bowling in Jackson and he was an avid fisherman.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Georgia Beene Phillips and two children: Rex Phillips and wife Denise of Finger and Elaine Williams and husband Mike of Lexington. He has four grandchildren: Jill Phillips of Huntsville, Adam Phillips of Finger, and Phillip and Blake Williams of Lexington. He has a brother, Lewis Phillips of Lexington, and was predeceased by a brother L. W. Phillips.
