C. J. ‘Ole’ Olness
Henderson: Carrol James Olness, age 77, died Friday afternoon at his home in Brownsville.
Mr. Olness was born and reared in Peterson, Minnesota, the son of the late Joseph Martin and Bertha Lillian Woxland Olness. He graduated from Peterson High School in 1951 and was married to Doris Helland and they made their home in Wisconsin. Mr. Olness worked in the photography business in sales and as a photographer in Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin. He married Doris Hill in 1963 and they made their home in Missouri and owned and operated a photography store.
Mr. Olness worked as a subcontractor, National Installation Systems where he did fixture installation for several large retailers, including McKesson Drug Company and Madix Drugs. He specialized in drug stores and later branched out into other retail business as well.
They moved to Henderson in 1979. They owned and operated Handy Center Hardware, The Wee One children’s clothing and The Sweet One ice cream and sandwich shop.
After his retirement he continued to assist his son Shawn with National Installation Systems.
They had lived in Brownsville the past three years and he was a member of the Northside United Methodist Church in Jackson.
Ole was extremely proud of being a third generation full blooded Norwegian. His grandparents on the Olness side and the Woxland side migrated here from Norway.
He is survived by his wife of 43 1/2 years Doris Olness of Brownsville, four sons Larry Olness and wife Shellie of Oviedo, FL, Steven Olness of San Jose, CA, Michael Crame of Henderson and Shawn Olness and wife Regenia of Henderson, two daughters Shellie Muyres and husband Dan of Rochester, Minnesota and Trish Olness Wooley of Brownsville, 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson Dustin Olness.
He also has three sisters; Beverly Olson and husband Lewis of Peterson, Minnesota, Jean Way and husband Dave of Brownsdale, Minnesota and Barbara Hovland and husband George of Rushford, Minnesota.
