Henderson: Buford Ernest Ward, 92, passed away on January 8, 2012 after a lengthy illness. He was born on September 24, 1919 in Chester County to the late Tom and Dovie Dees Ward. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Willard D. Ward and Homer L. Ward.
Mr. Ward grew up in the Montezuma community, graduated from Chester County High School in 1938, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941. While in the Army, he served in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged in 1945. He married Allene Coleman in 1946 and they made their home in Henderson with their four children: Barbara (David) Wall of Murfreesboro, Debbie (Kirk) Bond of Jackson, Bill (Nancy) Ward of Henderson, and Thom (Kelly) Ward of Cataula, GA. Mr. Ward is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Ward retired in 1980 after 35 years with Tennessee Valley Authority. After his retirement, he enjoyed raising cattle, hunting, fishing, and gardening on his farm in Henderson. He was an active member of Henderson First United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees, worked with the youth, and was a member of the Crusaders class. He also served as a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels Program in Chester County. In 2004, Mr. Ward received Life Membership in the Masons of Tennessee.
