Billy Ray Vinson

November 21, 1930 — May 10, 2010

Billy Ray Vinson was born November 21, 1930 in Bemis, Tennessee the son of the late Harold Pettigrew and Wilma Wright Vinson.



Mr. Vinson was first united in marriage to Jane Hinton, who preceded him in death on November 23, 1960. On October 19, 1962, he was united in marriage to June Adkisson.



Mr. Vinson was a graduate of Adamsville High School, and also attended the University of Memphis and Union University. He retired as a rural mail carrier in 1999. Mr. Vinson was a 55 year member of the American Legion, the Adamsville Masonic Lodge, and the Scottish Rite. He spent 35 years operating Vinson Drug Store and 29 years with Vinson Insurance Agency.



Mr. Vinson was a 71 year member of the Adamsville First United Methodist Church, and had served on the Hardin County Board of Education for 34 years, 10 of which he served as Chairman. In 1979, Mr. Vinson chaired the Tennessee School Boards Association, and in 1980 was elected Chairman of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He served on this Board, which oversees a 13 state region, for 9 years. He also served 6 years on the Tennessee State Board of Education. He was privileged to receive the C. Hal Henard Distinguished Service Award in 1986, the highest honor given to a school board member, and in 2009 was named an honorary lifetime member of the Hardin County Board of Education. The boardroom of the Hardin County Board of Education bears his name, a fitting tribute to one who gave so much to education.



During the Korean War, Mr. Vinson served in the United States Air Force for 2 years. He was also a former member of the Lions Club, and had worked with the McNairy County Ambulance Service for 4 years.



Mr. Vinson departed this life on May 10, 2010 in Adamsville, Tennessee at the age of 79 Years, 5 Months, 19 Days. He is survived by his wife of 47 years,June (Adkisson) Vinson of Adamsville, TN; four daughters: Juna Pettit and husband Mark of Adamsville, TN, Jill Stroud and husband Sean of Franklin, TN, Jan Butkey and husband Bill of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Jenny Sain and husband Jason of Florence, AL; two sons, Jack Ray Vinson and wife Lisa of Jackson, TN and Dr. John Vinson and wife Katherine of Adamsville, TN; 15 grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends.



In addition to his parents and first wife, Mr. Vinson was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. H. W. Vinson, and a grandson, Jeremy Vinson.
