Mr. Billy Ray Carter, age 78, of Medon, departed this life Saturday morning, January 30, 2016 at his home.
The widower of Polly Carter, who died in 2006 after 52 years of marriage, he worked as quality control manager with Harman Automotive for over 20 years and also had worked with the Kilgore Corporation and most recently with the County Highway Department. He was born June 13, 1937 in Medon, son of the late William Alec Carter and Dessie King Carter and lived his whole life in Hardeman County. He served in the National Guard and was a member of New Union Baptist Church. He had an intense love of being outdoors, enjoying fishing and hunting, but his family states that his greatest love was being around his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Robin and Jeff Fawcett of Decatur, AL; two sons and their wives, Tim and Rosemary Carter of Ripley, TN, Todd and Kathy Carter of Medon; a sister, Opal Avent of Shelbyville; nine grandchildren, Russ, Greg, Melanie and Evan Carter, Nick Bass, Seth and Mitch Fawcett, David and Sarah Carter; and ten great grandchildren, Rylie, Katie Jane, Mary Denton, John Gregory, Mady, Caylie Mae, Hudson, Henry, Kloe and Kristopher. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Randy in 2014; a grandson, Logan Carter in 2010; three brothers, Leroy, Raymond and Hoyt; and four sisters, Lennie Mae Cleek, Graple Hampton, Ossie Ruth Davis and Pearl Frye. The family requests memorial donations in Mr. Carter's name be made to the Tyler Bomar Scholarship.
