William ‘Bill’ Jewell

Henderson: William Arthur ‘Bill’ Jewell, age 83, retired Henderson Postmaster, died Friday afternoon, April 1, 2016 at Jackson General Hospital.

Mr. Jewell was born in Decatur County and grew up in Humboldt, the son of the late William Walter and Lerah Theresa Inman Jewell. He graduated from Gibson High School in 1950 and had already enlisted in the U. S. Army. He served in Germany during the Korean War. He served over 22 years in the Army, and served a total of over 40 years in the Army, the Tennessee National Guard, and the Tennessee Defense Force. Mr. Jewell was a strong advocate of the VFW, had served as Post Commander and in other positions. He was coordinator for the Henderson Veterans Day and Memorial Day services on many occasions.

He had owned the Milan Big Star, the Dairy Bar in Medina, and had worked as a salesman with Dubois Chemicals.

He married Glenda Connor in 1974 and they made their home in Henderson most of their married life.

He worked in the Henderson Post Office and served as Postmaster, retiring after 27 years of service.

Mr. Jewell served as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Henderson for many years and was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church. He was very active in Gideons International and had promoted The Gideons, speaking at over 300 churches across West Tennessee, as well as various school programs handing out New Testaments on behalf of The Gideons

He was also involved in The American Red Cross and The American Cancer Society, serving as local chairman in both organizations. He chaired the St. Jude Bike-A-Thon and was always willing to give of his time and effort supporting various charitable fund drives.

He is survived by his wife Glenda Connor Jewell, two sons; Lee Jewell of Port Orange, FL and Art Jewell of Jackson, three daughters; Gina Jewell Cowsert of Trenton, FL, Donna Jewell Hines of Olive Branch, MS and Amber Jewell Guthrie of Henderson, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a sister Shirley Jewell Fortner of Byhalia, MS. He was preceded in death by two brothers; Wendell Jewell and Virgil Jewell and two sisters; Aretha Blankenship and Wanda Jewell.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday at Grace Baptist Church with Johnny Connor and Charlie Crouthers officiating. Burial will follow with Military Honors at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Mifflin.

The family will receive friends at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM Sunday and Monday from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM at Grace Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Gideons International.
