Bettye Sue McClain

Bettye Sue Sims McClain was born on February 4, 1937, in the Gravel Hill Community of McNairy County, Tennessee, to the late J.T. Sims and Leola Armstrong Sims.

On June 26, 1953, Bettye united in marriage with James D. McClain, forging a partnership filled with love and companionship until his passing on November 15, 2009.

Known for her strong work ethic and dedication, Bettye dedicated 20 years to the Brown Shoe Company and retired as a truck driver for East West Motor Freight. She exemplified hard work and perseverance, always willing to go the extra mile for her family.

A firecracker with an indomitable spirit, Bettye was also a natural leader. In her high school days, she was a great basketball player, astonishingly scoring 100 points in a single game. Her remarkable talent and determination inspired those around her.

Bettye became a member of Gravel Hill Baptist Church in 1949. She found joy in playing the piano, immersing herself in daily devotionals, and cherishing every moment spent with her family.

On April 4, 2025, Bettye departed this life at her home in the Gravel Hill Community, at the age of 88 years and 2 months. Her legacy of love, strength, and commitment to family will forever resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.

She is survived by two daughters, Jan McClain Parson and husband Dennis, Sherry McClain Crumby and husband Tommy; 15 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren and one on the way; a niece and a nephew.

In addition to her husband and parents, Bettye was preceded in death by four children: Jerry K. McClain, Mike T. McClain, Melody J. McClain Clayton, and infant son Ronnie G. McClain; a sister, Nancy Sims Burns.
