Funeral services for Bert Walker, age 95, of Waynesboro,TN will be on Thursday, March 27, 2008, 1:00 pm Shackelford Funeral Home, Waynesboro, TN with Marvin Champion officiating. Interment following in Philadelphia Cemetery, Waynesboro with Shackelford Funeral Directors of Wayne County in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 26 from 5:00-9:00 pm and on Thursday, March 27 from 8:00 am until service time at Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel, Waynesboro.
Bert Walker a native of Wayne County, TN died on Sunday, March 23, 2008 at his residence in Waynesboro. He was born on July 10, 1912 to the late John Alvis and Laura Morrison Walker. Mr. Bert was preceded in death by a brother; Jean C. Walker, Sr.
Mr. Bert was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Memphis, TN. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. A selected, he entered into active service in May 1941. He was in the 8th Medical Battalion and then transferred to the Air Corps, Jefferson Barracks, Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He served as an airplane mechanic when he reached Rantoul, Illinois. He attended a mechanic school on B-24’s in Detroit, Michigan. He was stationed in Salt Lake City with “ an Induction Centerâ€, in Tucson, Arizona, Colorado and Salina, Kansas. He was assigned to invasion areas in the bomb group during this time, and was also in a Training Squadron. He was discharged in November 1945. After he was discharged, Bert lived in Memphis where he worked as an aircraft mechanic. He retired and moved back to Waynesboro in 1983. Mr. Bert brother Jean also served in World War II.
