Bernice Whitehurst Barnes, age 95, died a faithful Christian on Sunday, November 16, 2008 in Corinth, MS. She was born April 29, 1913 in Corinth, MS to Barnett and Annie Myrtle Brice Whitehurst. She played girls' basketball at Michie High School and graduated in 1931 as the salutatorian. She married Eugene Barnes on December 30, 1933. Mr. Barnes preceded her in death on January 24, 1958. They moved to Memphis where she was a charter member of the Macon Road church of Christ. After retiring from Anderson Clayton Cotton Exchange, Mrs. Barnes returned to Corinth and worked for the city's Light Gas and Water Department.
Mrs. Barnes was an exceptional mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and a member of the Foote Street church of Christ and also attended Acton church of Christ. She was known for her charm, beauty, intelligence, quick wit, sports talk, good cooking, interior decorating, and love for family and friends.
Mrs. Barnes is survived by her son, John Edward Barnes and wife Diana of Alabaster, AL; two granddaughters, April Barnes Manning of New York City, NY and Dawn Carr of Little Rock, AR; sister, Azalee Whitehurst Ambrose and husband Basil of Acton; sister-in-law, Thelma Holmes Whitehurst of Acton; brother-in-law, Charles Ragland of Acton; she also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, Ray Whitehurst, Garland Whitehurst and wife Georgia, Alice Whitehurst Moore, Gweneth Ambrose Smithers and husband Martin, Sidney Ambrose Bentley and husband David, Janet Ambrose Gelsinger and husband Thomas, Harvey Ambrose and wife Janet, Chuck Ragland and wife Amy, Philip Ragland, Steven Ragland, Dennis Barnes, Jerry Barnes, Nancy Barnes, Suzanne Bonsignore, and many great grand nephews and nieces; her dear friends, Inez Helton, Nelda Parrish, Evelyn Claybourne and Wanza Gray.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs Barnes was preceded in death by a brother, Barnett Brice Whitehurst; sister, Janet Whitehurst Ragland; nephew, Clay Ragland; two great nieces, Grace Ambrose and Annie Brittain.
