Mrs. Annie Maude Scott Brown died Monday, March 24, 2009 at the Chester County (TN) Nursing Home at the age of 97. Mrs. Brown, a retired homemaker , seamstress, and home economics teacher in the schools of Lee County ,Mississippi, had made her home in Henderson, TN since 2001. Family visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday March 26th and funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Friday March 27th will be at Shackleford’s Casey Chapel, Henderson, TN. Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m. Friday at the Prentiss County Memorial Gardens, Hwy. 145 North in Baldwyn, MS. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Church of Christ. Brother Tom Childers will officiate at the funeral service. Brother Earl Mitchell of Tupelo, MS will officiate at the graveside service.
Mrs. Brown was born December 1, 1911 in Gibson County, TN near Yorkville, the daughter of Horace Hall Scott and Jessie Lee Midyett Scott. She graduated from Newbern High School in 1930 and received her B.S. degree from Mississippi State College for Women at Columbus, MS in 1934. She taught for 23 years at Cedar Hill High School, Guntown, MS and for another 20 years at Baldwyn (MS) High School, retiring in 1977.
Mrs. Brown was active in Future Homemakers of America (FHA) and 4-H work with youth. In 1995 she was inducted into the FHA National Hall of Fame. She was active in Delta Kappa Gamma and Kappa Kappa Iota organizations of women educators and was for 28 years the north district secretary of the Mississippi Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her parents and in 1988 by her husband of fifty years, John Edward Brown of Guntown, MS. Also predeceasing were a brother, Thomas E. Scott of Henderson, TN; two brothers-in-law, Andrew Tilghman and Martin Greene; and a teenage great-nephew, Andy Davenport of Centralia, IL.
Mrs. Brown is survived by a sister, Mrs. Janie Scott of Centralia, IL, and by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. LaVonne B. Scott of Henderson, TN and Miss Effie Mae Brown of Baldwyn, MS. She is also survived by two nieces and four nephews: Mrs. Doris Ann Tilghman Davenport (husband David) , Centralia, IL; Mrs. Susan Scott Bradford (husband Frank), Henderson, TN; Terry Tilghman (wife Judy) of Guthrie, KY; Mike Greene (wife Lynn) of Kenton, TN; Ralph Scott of Henderson, TN and Tom Scott of McMinnville, TN.
Also surviving are eleven great-nieces and great nephews whom Mrs. Brown considered her grandchildren: Mrs. Susan Davenport Lowrance, Mrs. Terry Renee Tilghman Douglas, Ms. Sandy Mohon, Ms. Sarah Laird, Ms. Emily Laird, Mr. Clifton Laird, Mrs. Wendy Carroll, Mr. Chad Greene, Mr. Tyson Greene, Mr. Todd Scott and Mr. Cliff Scott. She also leaves a devoted caregiver, Mrs. Dianne Baker of Bemis, TN.
