Andrew F. Konyha

January 9, 1918 — January 2, 2006

ANDREW F. KONYHA

was born in Riley Township, Michigan on January 9, 1918, the son of John and Irma Toth Konyha. His early years were spent in that area prior to entering the United States Marine Corps on October 8, 1940. During his term in service, he met and married Hilda Minx who survives. She was of German descent and was living with her family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They had invited a soldier to supper one evening but, for some reason, he did not come. Hilda and another family member went searching for a soldier to feed and found Andrew alone in a hotel lobby reading a newspaper. They invited him to eat and the relationship blossomed. Their marriage lasted for over 60 years.

His time in the Marine Corps took him through World War II during which he served in the Marshall Islands, the Marriannas and on Iwojima. He received many honors for his service to his country, the highest being the Bronze Star. Mr. Konyha retired from the Marine Corps on October 31, 1960 after 20 years of service, however, he and his wife remained active in the Marine Corps veterans’ organization for many years after his retirement.

Following his military services, Mr. Konyha began working for the San Diego Water Department as an engineer. To keep busy, he also did their landscaping. Eventually, he and his wife moved to Morris Chapel where they lived for many years.

Andrew F. Konyha departed this life at Savannah Healthcare on January 2, 2006 at the age of 87 years, 11 months and 24 days. Other than his wife, Hilda, he is survived by:

4 sisters: Mary Highland of Johannesburg, Michigan,

Catherine Lange of Spring Hill, Florida, and

Charlotte Gay of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and

5 brothers: Peter Konyha of Port Washington, Wisconsin,

James Konyha of Redmond, Washington,

Eugene Konyha of Prudenville, Michigan,

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, John J. Konyha, Toby Konyha, George Konyha, Robert Konyha and Lawrence Konyha.
