Rev. Baker passed away Friday afternoon, April 5, 2019 at Bolivar General Hospital.
He was a native of Halls, TN, where he graduated high school in 1967 and had lived in Bolivar since February, 1978. His parents were the late James and Leota Pounds Baker. Rev. Baker played basketball and football while in school and had attended Bethel University in McKenzie for a time before going on to receive his Bachelor's Degree from Union University in Jackson. He received his Master's of Theology from Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX and was a minister for over 50 years. He served Parrans Chapel Baptist Church for 29 years and was interim at other congregations including Saulsbury Baptist Church. At the time of his passing, he was a member of Bolivar First Baptist Church and still serving churches needing a substitute preacher.
He loved to study and preach the Word of God. Additionally, he was an avid student of history, particularly the Civil War and enjoyed researching genealogies. He also was active in keeping in touch with all his high school classmates via Facebook.
Rev. Baker was also active in his community. He was a City of Bolivar Councilman and chaplain for the Tennessee Highway Patrol and Bolivar Police Department. He was a former 2nd Vice-President of the Tennessee Baptist Convention.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Bettye L. Hooper Baker of Bolivar; daughter, Amy (David) Hannis of Bolivar; son, Michael Baker of Bolivar; brother, Lindell (Peggy) Baker of Halls; and two grandchildren, Ethan and Landon Hannis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jeff Baker.
